Chiropractic adjustments

Chiropractic adjustments can be done to help with pain relief, or they can be done to maintain good health. When your spine is in alignment, everything in your body works better. The brain is the control center of the body, and it is vital for optimum health that the messages get through unimpeded. When your spine is out of alignment, nothing in the body works as well as it should. Chiropractic adjustments can be done manually, or they can be instrument assisted.

Manual spinal adjustments

The most commonly used chiropractic adjustment technique is the Diversified Technique. It is taught at most chiropractic schools. This technique is the one that most people associate with chiropractic care. It uses a quick thrust over the joints, one at a time, and it causes a popping sound like cracking your knuckles that is associated with adjustment.

The Gonstead Technique of spinal adjustments spends more time determining where exactly the pain is originating before making any adjustments. X-rays are often used to help determine more specifically where the misalignment is located.

Instrument assisted

Instrument adjustments are gentler and very specific to a smaller area of the neck or spine. The treatment does not cause the popping sound of the manual adjustments. This treatment works well on people who don't like the popping noise or who are smaller or more delicate.

What do adjustments treat?

Many conditions can be treated with a chiropractic adjustment. The most obvious is back pain. Back pain can be caused by many things and an adjustment can help to get things back in alignment. The back can be forced out of alignment by an injury or by a fall. Adjustments can also be used on the neck when it is stiff and painful. Headaches resulting from neck tension respond to adjustment.

Extremity adjustment

Extremity adjustment can be used on other parts of the body besides the spine. The shoulders, knees, ankles, hips, and wrists are all good candidates for adjustment.
